Why are Quat’s not Considered to be Eco-Friendly?
Quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats) are not considered environmentally friendly for several reasons:
- Persistence in the Environment – Quats do not readily biodegrade and can accumulate in soil and water systems, leading to long-term environmental contamination.
- Toxicity to Aquatic Life – Quats are highly toxic to fish, aquatic invertebrates, and algae. When they enter waterways through wastewater, they can disrupt ecosystems and contribute to biodiversity loss.
- Contribution to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) – Overuse of Quats has been linked to the development of antimicrobial resistance, making it harder to control harmful bacteria in the long term. This poses a significant risk to public health.
